Basic Comments
The course Radiation Therapy Physics will be held in cooperation between
the University of Oldenburg (Department of Physics) and the Radiation Therapy
Clinic of the Pius Hospital Oldenburg (Medical Physics Group). It
offers the possibility to get familiar with Radiation Therapy, one of the
most important fields of Medical Physics.
The course is devided into two parts (Basic and Advanced Medical Radiation
Physics). It is divided into lectures, laboratory courses and seminars.
By attending the course lectures and performing laboratory exercises
the participant gets the skills to perform a Master Thesis in the
field of Medical Radiation Physics. There is the possi- bility to
do this either in the Pius Hospital or in cooperation with one of
several closely related companies and universities.
The Radiation Therapy Clinic of the Pius Hospital is one of the largest
and best equipped therapy sites in the area. The clinic offers modern
techniques in Radiation Therapy and is involved in the development of new
techiques. Therefore, the close cooperation with international leading
companies is an excellent opportunity for the successfull student to enter
the professional market. Research cooperations with other universities
and research institutes are held by some members of the group.
Inhalt:
The lecture covers the fundamentals of ionizing radiation and its interaction
with matter, including applications in Medical Radiation Physics. It also
covers the basic aspects of radiation dosimetry and radiation therapy.
The lab course offers the opportunity to gain practical experience
in basic aspects of Medical Physics applied to radiation therapy.
It complements the theroretical introduction of radiation physics
and dosimetry. This is held in the Radiotherapy Clinic of the Pius
Hospital Oldenburg. The students are introduced to the operation of
various therapy units and and can work with different dose measurement
devices.
A master copy of the texts recommended for the course will be available
in the library of the University.

SEMESTER 2 (Winter 2001/02)
Advanced Medical Radiation Therapy
The second part of the course in Medical Radiation Physics is focussed
on special topics of interest in the field of Radiation Therapy Physics.
The students will work in small groups on special fields concerning
new developments and methods recently introduced in the Radiation
Therapy Clinic. The groups are guided by a tutor during the theoretical
preparation and laboratory measurements. After some lectures on the
basic theroretical backgrounds of the different projects, the first
results will be presented to the other students. This allows the
paticipants of the course to work on state-of-the-art techniques and gain
important experience in special fields of radiation therapy.
Topics
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy, Brachytherapy, Portal Imaging
Systems, Radiation Protection, Radiosurgery
Selected Topics in Medical Physics
The course will be continued as in the first semester.
