Once an article has been peer reviewed, accepted for publishing, copy edited and author proofed, what else needs to be done for the article to be published?
The article must be citeable, locatable, accessible and readable.
In today's, print/paper-based world, these characteristics are accomplished by placing the article in the issue of a journal, positioning the article by subject or topic, identifying the article by page number and locating the article via a table of contents.
Could we do it faster electronically?
Yes and break the 'tyranny' of the print process.

Using current technology, it is possible to shorten the cycle considerably by publishing the definitive article, electronically, shortly after acceptance with subsequent traditional packaging in the printed issue of the journal.
